The University offers a four year combined program leading to the award of the degress of Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Economics.

This combined degree program will appeal to students wanting a strong, broad and highly regarded business course to complement a program of a in depth study in economics to a professional level. Students will complete a major stream in both a selected areas of Commerce and study in the professsional discipline of Economics. With approval, students with an appropriate academic record may also enrol in an additional Honours year in the relevant Honours degree program offered in either the Commerce or Economics component of the combined degree.

Entry to the course will be by quota with the admission requirements being not less than those for the degree with the highest requirement. There is no automatic transfer between Bachelor of Commerce or the Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Economics programs. Students may apply to transfer between these Programs under the Faculty transfer rules at the time of application.

Students in this program must complete 12 units of credit in General Education courses or their equivalent (unless otherwise entitled to exemption). For further information, please refer to General Education Requirements.

Please note that students enrolled in programs within the Faculty of Business cannot take General Education courses offered by the Faculty of Business.

Students enrolled in programs within the Faculty of Business are not permitted to undertake the following General Education courses:

For the award of the degrees of BCom/BEc, the following requirements must be satisfied:

1. Completion of 192 units of credit including:

i. At least 72 units of credit from the courses offered by the School of Economics (or approved quantitative substitutions) in the Faculty of Business and at least 84 units of credit from courses offered by other Schools in the Faculty of Business.

ii. Completion of the required courses for a major in one of the approved areas of study for the Bachelor of Commerce, as listed below.

Note that students are able to take Modern Language only as a co-major in the Bachelor of Commerce.

iii. Completion of the required courses for a major in one of the approved areas of study for the Bachelor of Economics, as listed below.

Note that students are able to take Asian Studies only as a co-major in the Bachelor of Economics.

iv. Completion of the required courses for a minor in an approved area of study in either component.

v. A student may have only three majors recognised in this combined degree program.The combined program can be structured in one of the following options:

At the discretion of the program authority, variations to course requirements within individual programs may be approved.

2. All Students must complete 36 UOC of common Level 1 core courses as follows:

* Approved courses in mathematics are required for particular majors.


3. Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 12UOC in General Education courses or their equivalent with approval

4. Within the first 4 sessions of full time study (or the first 96 UOC completed) all students must complete 36 UOC taught by the Faculty of Business, including compulsory courses listed above.

5. A student cannot count more than 72 UOC of Level 1 core and elective courses towards the combined degree program unless in exceptional circumstances.

The remaining units of credit required to satisfy the Commerce component may be chosen from any other undergraduate courses taught by the Faculty of Business.

Candidates for Honours must complete one year of study (48 units of credit) additional to the minimum required for the BCom/BEc at Pass Level. Students wishing to take the Bachelor of Commerce at Honours level must consult the Head of School in which they wish to study for Honours. The award with a degree of Honours requires:

i. a student to complete a major of at least 42 units of credit specified as necessary preparation for Honours year studies

ii. a student must complete a program prescribed as an approved major in the Honours year (see above).

1. Of the minimum 72 units of credit in courses related to an approved program of study offered by the School of Economics (or approved quantitative substitute) for the combined degree.

2. Each student must include the following in their degree program:

i. a major of at least 60 units in the following disciplinary streams:
Economics
Econometrics
Economic History or
Financial Economics
(including units taken as core studies where applicable)

ii. or a double major of 84 units of credit, with at least 48 units of credit in the following disciplinary streams:
Economics
Econometrics
Economic History
Financial Economics
Asian Studies#

3. Candidates for Honours must complete one year of study (48 units of credit) additional to the minimum required for Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Economics at Pass level. The award of a degree of Bachelor of Economics with Honours requires:

i. the completion of a least 60 units of credit (single major) or 84 units of credit (double major)in the above listed disciplinary streams specified as necessary preparation for fifth year studies.

ii. completion of four specified courses in fifth year and a thesis that is the equivalent of two courses (one year of study, undertaking 48 units of credit). Honours studies may proceed in more than one disciplinary stream prior to fifty year. In the fifty year, Honours may be taken in the following disciplinary streams only:
Economics
Econometrics
Economic History or combined Economics/Econometrics
