Program Description

Bachelor of International Studies/Bachelor of Laws

This program provides an opportunity to obtain two degrees of professional importance to the public sector, community service, business and law practice. The Law courses satisfy the requirements for the award of the professional LLB degree. The International Studies component provides the knowledge and skills essential for understanding and working in the rapidly changing global environment.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

This program combines a law degree with one of four international studies streams: Asian Studies; European Studies; Globalisation and Languages. The structure of the program differs between the streams but each includes a combination of humanities and social science courses. An overseas study period of one to two semesters in either the third or fourth year is an essential component of the program - prerequisite to this is satisfactory progress towards the degree in first and secomd years of study.

Law courses - 150 UOC

Core courses - 94 UOC
Elective courses - 56 UOC

The core courses are taken in a specified sequence during Years 1 to 4. Details are given below. After completing the majority of the core courses students are eligible to enrol in electives in Years 4 and 5.

International Studies - 138 UOC

A combination of courses as per plan requirements of each stream 90 UOC
Two semsters of study in an approved program at an o/s institution 48 UOC

Asian Studies stream

3 x 6 UOC International Studies core sequence: (2 x Level 1 core courses, 1 x Level 4 core courses) - 18 UOC
6 x 6 UOC ASIA or Asia -related courses - 36 UOC
6 x 6 UOC One approved language sequence: CHIN, INDO,JAPN or KORE - 36 UOC
Approved Overseas Study program - 48 UOC

European Studies stream

3 x 6 UOC International Studies core sequence: (2 x Level 1 core courses, 1 x Level 4 core courses) - 18 UOC
6 x 6 UOC EURO courses including EURO1000 and EURO1001 - 36 UOC
6 x 6 UOC One approved language sequence: FREN, GERS,ITAL,GREK,RUSS or SPAN - 36 UOC
Approved Overseas Study program - 48 UOC

Global Studies stream

5 x 6 UOC International Studies core sequence: (2 x Level 1 core courses, INST3900 at Level 4, plus 2 other courses) - 18 UOC
6 x 6 UOC GLST courses including GLST1100(Level 1) and GLST3000(Level 4) - 36 UOC
4 x 6 UOC One approved language sequence: CHIN, FREN,GERS,GREK,ITAL,INDO,JAPN,KORE,RUSS or SPAN - 36 UOC

General Education Requirements

Students enrolled in combined law degrees are not required to complete general education courses.

Honours

The B InSt component is available at Honours level. To qualify for the award of the degree at Honous level a student must have obtained 138UOC in approved courses, satisfied the appropriate prerequisites for entry into the Honours level program, and have obtained a further 48 units of credit in an approved Honours program. The Honours degree is awarded in three classes(Class I, Class II in two Divisions, and Class III). Students who fail to obtain one of these classes may proceed to graduate with a Pass degree.
