Stream Outline

The stream is designed for students who are completing the Masters of Biomedical Engineering program as part of a dual-award program with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in the following specialisations only:
  • Bioinformatics Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechatronic Engineering
  • Software Engineering
  • Telecommunications
Students are required to complete 72 units of credit, 48 of which must be at postgraduate level and a minimum of 48 units must be from the courses listed below. Examples of some suggested program schedules can be viewed at the GSBmE website

The core biomedical engineering content may be selected from the following options:

Semester 1

Semester 2
Notes:

The following courses are required by all students:
  1. PHSL2121 Principles of Physiology 1A.
  2. BIOM9410 Regulatory Requirements for Biomedical Technology.
  3. Students must do the Biomedical Engineering Thesis A and Thesis B instead of the thesis courses offered in their BE (Hons) specialisation. These are BIOM5001 and BIOM5003 (Mech and Mtrn), BIOM5930 and BIOM5932 (Chem), BIOM5910 and BIOM5911 (Elec, Tele, Mats), BIOM5950 and BIOM5951 (Comp, Soft, Binf).
  4. BIOM9420 Clinical Laboratory Science. Should be taken in the second or third year of the dual program, depending on the specialisation
The following two courses are required by students in the indicated specialisations:
(This course is to done by students in the dual Mechanical Engineering/Biomedical Engineering and Mechatronic Engineering/Biomedical Engineering)
(This course is to be done by students in the dual Chemical Engineering/Biomedical Engineering)

Additional Electives
  • The first-year engineering elective BIOM1010 Engineering in Medicine and Biology is recommended for students in this program.
  • Students may take PHSL2221 Principles of Physiology 1B after they have taken PHSL2121.
