Stream Outline
Sociology and Anthropology will appeal to you if you are interested in the social and cultural relations through which we live. If you are doing a major in the humanities, Sociology and Anthropology as a minor will give you an invaluable social and cross-cultural perspective. If you are majoring in a specialist social science, most of which grew from Sociology and Anthropology, a minor in Sociology and Anthropology will give greater depth and cross-cultural breadth. If you are majoring in a discipline that is concerned with social and cultural trends, a minor in Sociology and Anthropology will improve your analytical skills, your conceptual understanding and your appreciation of ethical relations.
Upon successful completion of a Sociology and Anthropology stream, you will be able to:
- understand the social nature of the relationship between individuals, groups and institutions.
- recognise both the particularity of different times, different places and different cultures, and the connectedness of all forms of life.
- understand and work with some of the key concepts and theoretical approaches that have developed and are developing within and between Sociology and Anthropology.
- question cultural assumptions, and think critically, imaginatively and creatively.
- analyse the ethical issues in social research and in public and private life.
