Stream Outline
European Studies is an interdisciplinary area of study focusing on modern European societies and their and cultures, past and present, and their historical traditions. European Studies brings together the perspectives and approaches of disciplines such as History, Philosophy, Cultural and Literary Studies, Politics and International Relations, to explore modern Europe.
European Studies at UNSW is much more than an eclectic array of courses with some European connection. We believe that, while it is important to understand the process of European integration and the workings of the EU, European Studies cannot be limited to these questions. Consequently we offer a wide-ranging and coherent curriculum that emphasizes the political, ideological, social and cultural forces that have shaped modern and contemporary Europe.
The aims and objectives of the minor in European Studies are:
- To build students' knowledge of the political, economic, social and cultural developments that have occurred, and are occurring, in the European region;
- To instil a critical appreciation of Europe in relation to Australia;
- To develop the intellectual, creative and analytical skills of students;
- To prepare Europe-literate graduates whose skills and knowledge will leave them well placed for future career success.
