Stream Outline
The Chemisty stream is designed for students who wish to specialise in the chemical sciences and undertake the maximum number of Chemistry courses. It is designed to provide education and training in all contemporary fields of chemistry, and should be selected by students who wish to devote the majority of their studies at Stage III to Chemistry.
The School of Chemistry recommends the following complementary discipline areas for a major in Chemistry: Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Earth Science, Materials Science, Mathematics or Physical Sciences. Inclusion of advanced level studies from more than one field of specialisation results in a broadly based degree in the chemical sciences. For example, a combination of Chemistry and Biochemistry leads to further work in areas such as toxicology and neurochemistry. Combining Level III Chemistry with Mathematics provides a valuable basis for the many applications of computers in Chemistry. Chemistry with Physics or Materials Science allows entry into the rapidly developing field of advanced materials.

A major in Chemistry in Advanced Science programs is comprised of 78 units of credit of courses as follows:
Stage 1
- CHEM1031 Higher Chemistry A (6 UOC)
- CHEM1041 Higher Chemistry B (6 UOC)
PLUS one of:
- MATH1031 Mathematics for Life Sciences (6 UOC)
- MATH1131 Mathematics 1A (6 UOC)
- MATH1141 Higher Mathematics 1A (6 UOC)
PLUS one of:
- MATH1041 Stats for Life & Soc Sciences (6 UOC)
- MATH1231 Mathematics 1B (6 UOC)
- MATH1241 Higher Mathematics 1B (6 UOC)
PLUS one of:
- PHYS1111 Fundamentals of Physics (6 UOC)
- PHYS1121 Physics 1A (6 UOC)
- PHYS1131 Higher Physics 1A (6 UOC)
Stage 2
- CHEM2031 Inorganic Chemistry & Structure (6 UOC) or CHEM2839 Inorganic Chemistry (6 UOC)
Stage 3
24 UoC of Level III Chemistry of which at least 18 UoC must be from:
and the remaining 6 UOC may be from any Chemistry level III course listed above not already taken, or any of the following Chemistry elective courses:
NOTE: It is recommended that students in program 3972 complete all four core courses (CHEM3011, CHEM3021, CHEM3031 and CHEM6041) and at least one additional level III CHEM elective course.
