Stream Outline

An Honours year in Mathematics or Statistics is taken in one of Applied Mathematics (MATHAH####), Pure Mathematics (MATHPH####), or Statistics (MATHTH####),.

If you achieve a Credit or above average in at least four Level III Mathematics courses you should consider an Honours degree. The Honours year introduces students to recent knowledge and current research. It consists not only of advanced lecture topics but also of an Honours thesis. The lectures attempt to bring students near the frontier of each area, with the Honours lecturers generally presenting material in areas to which they are contributing new knowledge.

Stream Structure

The admission requirements for a student to enter Honours Mathematics are that you must have either:
  • Completed a Mathematics or Statistics Major in the Science program, including at least 30 units of credit in Level III Mathematics; or
  • Completed a suitable Mathematics or Statistics degree at another university.
In addition, you must have the permission of the Head of the appropriate Department. To obtain this permission consult with the appropriate Departmental Honours Coordinator as early as possible in your academic career.

Students are normally required to have an average of 70% or above in Level III Mathematics courses and to have shown some evidence of the ability to undertake independent study.

So that students have sufficient background to attempt the courses in the Honours year, it is recommended that you discuss your selection of Level III courses with your Departmental Honours Coordinator or another academic adviser.

For Honours in Pure Mathematics, you must normally take a significant number of your Level II and III Mathematics courses at the Higher level.

Honours students enrol full-time or part-time in one of the Honours programs:

Other students who are sufficiently well-prepared may enrol in individual Honours courses under the course number.
