Plan Outline

The UNSW School of Mathematics and Statistics offers a complete range of courses in Mathematics and Statistics at all levels. The School is also a leading centre for mathematical research at both the national and the international level; our expertise ranges across wide areas of Mathematics, including Financial Mathematics, Biomedical Mathematics, and Environmental Mathematics.

Plan Structure

A major in Mathematics is comprised of 54 UOC of courses as follows:

Stage 1
Students are also strongly recommended to take MATH1081 Discrete Mathematics (6UOC)

Stage 2

Stage 3
  • 12 UOC of non-statistics level III (or hybrid) Mathematics course. 1
  • 6 UOC of any level III (or hybrid) Mathematics course not already taken.
Notes:
  1. Courses numbered from MATH3000 to MATH3699 or MATH6700 to MATH6899 inclusive are non-statistics Mathematics courses.

Notes

Students majoring in Mathematics are strongly recommended to take MATH2301 or an equivalent course in practical numerical computing.

Many courses in Mathematics are offered at two levels. The higher level courses cater for students with greater mathematical ability and/or a higher level of prior knowledge. Students with suitable qualifications are encouraged to enrol in the corresponding higher level courses.

Students who are completing the Bachelor Science (majoring in Mathematics) in concurrent mode with a Bachelor of Engineering will need to substitute some level II courses in the Engineering program. For more information see this document: Mathematics in BE BSc Programs or contact the School of Mathematics and Statistics.
