Plan Outline

Today's labour markets place more and more emphasis on the knowledge and skills acquired in higher education and an Honours degree is a sure way to distinguish yourself from other job applicants. Many employers and post-graduate institutions will only consider applicants who have a strong Honours degree. This is especially true for jobs and post-graduate places in Economics. A successful Honours year is a sure way to distinguish yourself from other job applicants. Graduates with an Honours degree from the School of Economics at UNSW have moved on to successful careers in both academia and the public and private sectors.

The Honours degree in Financial Economics is targeted to those students with the equivalent of a BCom pass degree in Financial Economics. To satisfy the Honours requirements, students undertake an additional year of study, completing Honours level courses (both compulsory and elective) and undertaking a research thesis. Students must have completed the prerequisite courses prior to their Honours year.

Plan Structure

The following courses are recommended as good preparation for Honours, either as an elective in the major or as an additional free option in the degree program:

Courses Required Prior to Year 4
Students must complete 48 units of credit (UOC) in the Financial Economics Honours Program.
This requires completion of a thesis which accounts for 24 UOC and the completion of four (4) Level 4 (ECON4XXX) courses from the Required and Elective course lists below.

Thesis
Students should enrol in ECON4127 in both Semester 1 and Semester 2, making 24 UOC.

Elective course list
Four further Level 4 (ECON4XXX) courses are to be completed from the following electives:
In certain circumstances and with the permission of the Head of School, one course from the below option list of courses from the Financial Economics disciplinary stream, or a Level 4 course from any School within the Australian School of Business, may be substituted for one of the Fourth Year Honours options.

Entry Requirements

To be admitted into Honours in the School of Economics, a candidate must have completed the equivalent of a BEc degree in Economics with a grade point average of at least 70% on second and third level courses (including non-economics courses).

How to Apply

Candidates intending to apply to the Honours programs are encouraged to discuss their eligibility and study program with Undergraduate Honours Coordinator for Economics
