Plan Outline

This plan is for Honours in Medical Microbiology and Immunology within Science programs.

Medical Microbiology and Immunology focuses on the processes of health and disease in relation to interactions between microscopic organisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa, and our bodies' immune defense system. In addition, the study of immune processes is extremely important for advances in modern medicine in areas such as blood transfusion, organ transplantation, treatments of allergic reactions and development of vaccines, and immunity to disease.

Medical Microbiology and Immunology is intertwined with the disciplines of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Genetics which examine molecular and intercellular processes of living organisms and ways that they can be altered to benefit human health and society.
The Microbiology and Immunology Degree Program caters for a diverse array of interests by allowing students to choose from a large selection of specialised courses during Stages 2 and 3.

Plan Structure

For entry to Honours a student must complete at least 24 units at Level III in the relevant Major sequence and have the permission of the Head of School.

This optional year of study is available to students who obtain high marks during their 3 year degree and provides an exciting and challenging opportunity to grapple with the real world of scientific research. Students who enrol in an Honours degree will be responsible for a full-time, advanced research project supervised by an academic staff member in the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences.

For enrolment, submit your Honours offer letter and complete the relevant paperwork at the Science Student Centre, Rm 128, Robert Webster Building.

Stage 4 (Honours)
Note: The following course is 24 UOC per semester for two semesters, for a total of 48 UOC.
