Plan Outline

This plan only applies to students who commenced their degree program before 2009.

This plan offers a major sequence in English, designed for students who have an interest in English language and literature and wish to develop sophisticated reading skills, an appreciation of literary texts in their wider intellectual and historical contexts, and the ability to write critically and creatively.

The usual prerequisite for enrolment into a Level 2 English course is the completion of 36 units of credit at Level 1, at least 6 of which are in English. The usual prerequisite for entry into a Level 3 English course is the completion of 12 units of credit in English at Level 2. Students who do not meet the prerequisites for a given course may apply in writing to the discipline advisor for special permission to enrol. In considering such requests, the School gives strong preference to candidates with a Credit or higher result in a related discipline.

Assessment in English courses may include a combination of the following: essays, class tests, tutorial/seminar participation, tutorial/seminar presentations, and examinations. Further details of assessment in particular courses are available from the course convenor.

Plan Structure

Any student who wishes to gain a major sequence in English must complete a minimum of 42 units of credit in English including:
  • a minimum of 6 and no more than 12 units of credit at Level 1;
  • a minimum of 12 units of credit at Level 2;
  • a minimum of 12 units of credit at Level 3.
The remaining units of credit can be taken at either Level 2 or Level 3. Students undertaking a major sequence are permitted to enrol in other courses offered by the School which are additional to the requirements of their basic major sequence.
