Plan Outline

This plan is for the Pure Mathematics Study Plan within an Advanced Science degree program.

Pure Mathematics is the study of the essential structures of mathematics. Work by pure mathematicians underpins most of the technological advances of this century. Pure Mathematics is concerned with problems and techniques which transcend specific applications. Research, focussing on the development of existing theories or the creation of new ones, may be driven by applications or by the internal demands of the discipline.

Pure Mathematics courses provide the insights and understanding required by those using mathematics, leading to mastery of the fundamental processes of mathematical science and the capacity for innovative applications in any area.

Plan Structure

Pure Mathematics courses relevant to the mathematical aspects of Computer Science are MATH2400 in Stage 2, and MATH3411 and MATH3421 in Stage 3.
Pure Mathematics courses relevant to Mathematics teaching are MATH3511, MATH3521, MATH3531, MATH3560 and MATH3570 in Stage 3, or their higher equivalents.
Pure Mathematics courses relevant to the applications of Mathematics in Physics or Engineering are MATH3531, MATH3541 and MATH3570 in Stage 3, or their higher equivalents.

  • Courses totalling 6 UOC from Science schools other than Mathematics
  • Elective courses totalling 18 UOC
  • General Education (3 UOC)

Stage 2
PLUS one course from:

  • Further Level II Mathematics courses totalling 6 UOC
  • Elective courses totalling 9 UOC
  • General Education (3 UOC)

Stage 3
  • Level III Pure Mathematics courses totalling 24 UOC
  • Further Level III courses in Mathematics totalling 12 UOC
  • Elective courses totalling 6 UOC
  • General Education (6 UOC)

Stage 4
Course unit loads are per semester. A complete Honours year is 48 UOC.
