The honours year will provide students with an opportunity to learn the necessary skills to tackle the financial issues and challenges they will encounter in their future careers. These include analytical skills in problem solving (identification of problems, mapping out solutions and executing them) and Financial (both practical and academic) research skills.

To satisfy the Honours requirements for Finance, students undertake an additional year of study, completing Honours level courses (both compulsory and elective) and undertaking a research thesis. Students must have completed the prerequisite courses prior to their Honours year. This program is available to the end of Year 3 only for BEc students and to the end of fourth year for BCom students only.

In order to enrol in Honours, students must have completed a single major or double major sequence in Finance and satisfied Honours prerequisites. Prior to their Honours year, students must complete the following prerequisite courses:

During Session 1, Students must also complete ONE elective course from the following:

During Session 2 of their Honours year, students undertake a Research thesis, and must enrol in the Thesis course for Finance.

Rule 4

4 For the Honours degree, a student must complete a further 48 units in an approved disciplinary stream.

4.1 Honours may be taken in one disciplinary stream only

4.2 The additional units, comprising specified courses from the relevant disciplinary stream and a thesis, must be completed in two sessions following the completion of the Pass degree component.

4.3 Honours degree will not be awarded if academic performance is below the prescribed level.

4.4 Except when recommended to the contrary by the relevant Head of School, a student intending to enter the Honours year must:

4.4.1 satisfy the Pass degree requirements and obtain a minimum average of 70% in Level 2 and Level 3 courses of the relevant disciplinary stream in the Pass degree component,

4.4.2 pass all courses in the Pass degree component at first attempt.

4.5 Except with the special permission of the program authority on the recommendation of the relevant Heads of School, a person on whom the Pass degree of Bachelor of Commerce or equivalent has been conferred shall not be admitted to candidature for the Honours degree of Bachelor of Commerce.

Entry into the BCom Honours in Finance program is open to all outstanding students who have completed their BCom degree requirements with a Major in Finance and have completed a minimum of seven finance courses (one of which must be FINS3775 Research Methods 1). Students in double degree programs at UNSW may do the honours year prior to or after their second degrees. Students with comparable qualifications may apply from other institutions.

The baseline requirements for admission to the honours program are:

Admission is based on whether the applicant is deemed to be able to achieve first class honours (average 85 and above during the honours year, see honours weighting scheme in section 9, of the (honours information booklet), or honours 2-1 (average 75 and above during the honours year). The admission decision will be notified in early January.
