The major in Irish Studies provides an interdisciplinary exploration of Irish history, culture and society over the past two hundred years that takes particular account of Ireland's relationships with Australia and with Europe.

The Level 1 courses offer students and understanding of the Irish contribution to the history of Australia and an understanding of contemporary Europe, of which Ireland is now part.

Given the literary component of the major, students are strongly advised to enrol in any of the Level 1 courses offered by the School of English. Upper Level courses are taught by different Schools in the Faculty and consequently the major enables students to enjoy a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches. Courses may be studied individually and, though all complement one another, all are designed to be self-contained.

The major sequence in Irish Studies comprises 12 units of credit at Level 1 and 24 Upper Level units of credit.
