Description

This course introduces students to Torres Strait history and examines issues of concern to Islanders today. Course content focuses on the Torres Strait Islander experience, and response to colonisation and change which has resulted in two communities: 1) on the islands; and 2) on the mainland. The course will draw from historical sources from early naval and scientific expeditions, as well as the Christian enterprise. The course will also explore Islander mobility, aspirations for sea and land rights, issues of marine biodiversity and climate change mitigation, and how these activities might create divisive, yet dynamic contexts for resistance and adaptation.

Please note: This course will not be offered in 2018.
