Who is free to speak and on what? In this course, you will analyse how freedom of speech is understood and regulated, as an example of the complexities around key questions of governance in contemporary Australian politics. In this course you will examine frameworks of freedom of speech, and how such questions involve the relation between parliament and judiciary in implementing key human rights and freedoms. Questions about discriminatory speech on the grounds of race, sex, and sexual orientation, blasphemy and religious vilification, pornography and other abuse materials, and obscenity in Australia are also placed within a comparative global context of conventions and institutions.
