This course is concerned with the history of Western architecture, from antiquity to the present. A wide span of time is covered, with lectures attending to renowned architects and theorists, as well as significant transitional moments. Changes are considered, as well as the persistence of classical principles, such as order, analogy, symmetry, proportion, composition and decorum. These are discussed in terms of the relevance to current beliefs and criteria of excellence in architecture. The fundamental grounding of the course lies in the human analogy, which pertains to a person’s positive regard for the spaces of a city, as well as a building’s exterior, interior and ornament.
