An appreciation of the range, utility and meaning of research and analytical techniques is a fundamental part of the planner's methodological training. This course provides an introduction to basic techniques of data collection and analysis, introductory statistics, survey design and qualitative research methods which are integral component of an urban planners skill set. Students will learn when to apply particular techniques and how to do so. Classes will involve lectures, lab time and getting out of the classroom to put these skills into practice in an applied planning context. In bringing together the techniques developed, students undertake a group research exercise where these newly developed skills can be applied.
