Description
Oxfam sees the Global Citizen as someone who:
- is aware of the wider world and has a sense of their own role as a world citizen
- respects and values diversity
- has an understanding of how the world works
- is outraged by social injustice
- participates in the community at a range of levels, from the local to the global
- is willing to act to make the world a more equitable and sustainable place
- takes responsibility for their actions.
What do you think it means to be a ‘global citizen’? Today, more than ever before, the global is part of our everyday, local lives. We are linked to others on every continent:
- socially through the media and telecommunications
- culturally through movements of people
- economically through trade
- environmentally through sharing one planet
- politically through international relations and systems of regulation.
The Introduction to Global Citizenship course will introduce students to the concepts of global citizenship and what it means to be globally competent. It will begin with a self evaluation so that students can understand their own identity before they proceed to develop a plan of action and engagement. Students will develop their global literacy (i.e. their understanding of self as a global citizen and their ability to work as part of a global community) and cultural literacy (i.e. their understanding of cultural differences and their ability to respect and value these differences in non-judgemental ways).
Students will also develop an understanding of the social and economic value of inclusive, sustainable and socially responsible organisational practices.
This course aims to provide students with opportunities to engage with current literature and experts and to extend themselves as citizens of a global world. They will reflect on how they can take an active role as global citizens to benefit humanity as a whole.
This course is part of the Diploma of Professional Practice (DPP). This course can also be completed as a General Education course in a student's primary program
