This course explores how genes vary and evolve through time and the important spatial relationships that constrain and sometimes drive genetic diversity and evolution. Starting with a look at cutting edge genome sequencing, lectures will explore how evolutionary theory underpins our understanding and analysis of genomic data, enabling us to unlock the secrets of life. Core concepts and methods in molecular evolution and population genetics will be introduced and supported by an integrated set of bioinformatics sequence analysis practicals using modern research methods and data. Skills developed during these practicals will provide excellent training for any students considering an Honours project in molecular bioscience.
