Art Since 1990 - SAHT3211
Description
This course addresses a range of artworks, themes and issues that have emerged in the decades since 1989. It contends that this date is a useful ‘signpost’ in that it corresponds with cultural changes that effectively signal the end of Postmodernism. The subject will make no attempt to enforce a unitary character on the art of this period. Instead, the late ‘eighties, ‘nineties and ‘naughties' will be studied from a number of perspectives. These will include: reactions to censorship scandals and debates; the meaning and impact of globalisation; the significance of the ‘post’ in ‘postfeminism’; the ‘discovery’ by the western artworld of contemporary ‘postcolonial’ art; the impact of new technologies on art, and, most recently, the response of artists to 9/11 and the ‘War on Terror’. These perspectives will be brought to bear on a range of artworks, in diverse media, produced both in Australia and Internationally.
