Theories of Colour in Art, Design and Culture - SAHT2215

This course examines the theoretical, philosophical and aesthetic considerations of colour and the ways in which colour theories have informed the production of art and design. Key theories of colour are examined and analysed including those of ancient Greek philosophers and key theorists such as Newton, Goethe and Chevreul. In addition, 19th and 20th century colour theories (Ostwald, Munsell, Albers and Itten) are critically examined along with the 21st century colour theories of Eliasson, Maund and O'Connor. The cultural and psychological importance that has been ascribed to colour are examined as well as the ways in which colour theories have been applied by a range of artists and designers.
