Description

This course is a capstone within the BSc Vision Science program that will extend and apply the basic optics and visual optics studied thus far to real world scenarios through hands-on experiences as well as through theoretical studies. At the same time, the course is designed to augment your studies in Ocular Anatomy and Physiology by providing contextual relevance. ‘Introduction to Clinical Optometry’ is also part of the BOptom program of study, as the first in a series of six courses that will provide the theoretical background and professional skills required for entry into the Primary Care Optometry Clinic at UNSW.

‘Introduction to Clinical Optometry’ will introduce you to the interrelationships between core consulting room optical equipment, common testing procedures, the patient and the practitioner, as well as the measurement of light and colour. The learning activities are conducted in an authentic setting and will give you insights into the needs of both the practitioner and the patient, and even of employers who must provide a visually safe workplace. Spectacles are a common outcome of an eye examination: you will learn not only how to choose frames, but also how lack of access to spectacles places an enormous burden on an individual and their community, particularly in developing countries. Hence, during this course your preparedness to take on social responsibility and global citizenship will be piqued, as well as your capabilities at problem solving and working both independently and as part of a team.
