In Modern Aesthetics: From Enlightenment to the 21st Century you will investigate a selection of the most influential aesthetic philosophies of modernity, from the late eighteenth century to the present. This covers the genesis of modern aesthetics in the philosophies of Immanuel Kant, G.W.F. Hegel, the Early German Romantics and Friedrich Nietzsche, followed by the study of Twentieth Century developments in aesthetic theory, including Marxist, modernist, postmodernist, and poststructuralist frameworks of aesthetics. You will conclude with recent developments in aesthetic theory, including ‘relational aesthetics,’ and Jacques Rancière’s theory of the politics of aesthetics. All aesthetic theories you study in this course will be applied to artistic examples, both historical and contemporary.
