The course will focus on Shakespeare's contribution to English drama. Students will study a range of Shakespeare's plays from different dramatic sub-genres (history, tragedy, comedy, romance, problem play) and will be introduced to a range of critical approaches to those plays. The course both acknowledges and provides opportunities to interrogate Shakespeare's exceptional position within English studies as a benchmark of literary excellence and a core presence within literary education.
