Description

The major goal of this course is to provide specific technical expertise in the area of opto-electronics and laser systems. The key learning outcome is the ability to make an informed analysis of the appropriate use of opto-electronic systems, including laser systems, in electronic systems design. This course builds upon previous courses in physics and mathematics, showing how such devices may be designed and utilised in practical situations.
Along the way, you will develop the ability to: describe the physical mechanisms underlying the operation of a number of opto-electronic system elements; make calculations of the energy, power, intensity, and bandwidth of a variety of optoelectronic sources; make calculations of the detected signal strength, noise, signal to noise ratio, noise equivalent power and bandwidth of a variety of opto-electronic receivers; discuss the design of opto-electronic systems based on calculations of the types above.
