Description

A compulsory course for honours students in the School of Social Sciences, which supports students in the writing of an honours thesis. This course comprises two intensive workshops and a series of supported independent study meetings. The first workshop in Week 1 of the semester revisits topics include using library resources for honours students including research consultation and access to databases; the role of theory in research and the use of theory in framing and conducting a research project in the social sciences; epistemological frameworks in the social sciences; planning and managing a research project; and introduces students to the idea of framing their research as an intervention in a disciplinary debate (or series of debates). Students then form study groups supported by a disciplinary staff member and meet at least weekly in Week 2-7 (inclusive) to discuss their progress on their research and to provide peer feedback on each others' draft chapters. The second intensive in Week 8 takes the form of mini-symposia organised along disciplinary or topic lines, where students present their work to staff and other students.
