This course deals with post-war West European politics and political history. It considers the domestic context and politics of West Europe's major countries (Britain, France, Germany and Italy), the inter-relationship between key national policies and international institutions, the international and domestic sources of tension, rivalry and partnership between West European states (and these states and major world powers). Major topics will include: the Cold War in Europe with its domestic and international dimensions, the development of a Western security system based on NATO and the idea of European unity, the transatlantic relationship, Europe after the Cold War and the politics of European monetary and economic integration.
