ARTS1781 (Europe and the World) is a first year compulsory core course in the European Studies Plan. It explores Europe's political, diplomatic, economic, social and military links with the rest of the world between the late XIX century and the early XXI century. More specifically, it focusses on Europe's relations with Australasia, the Americas, South Asia, East Asia, the Middle East and Africa. In doing so, it also examines the major developments that have shaped Europe's interactions with the rest of the world, including colonialism/imperialism, the two world wars, the changing world economy, the Cold War, decolonization and European integration. The successful completion of this course prepares students for further work in European Studies.
