Peripheral Visions 2:Perspectives of Colonial and - SAHT3634 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Description This course will investigate the effects of the spread of Euro-American 'modernism' through the Asian, Indian and South East Asian region during the Twentieth Century and particularly during the period following World War II. It will analyse the ways in which different cultures selectively adopt and transform aspects of various modernist styles and the ways in which these styles are incorporated into indigenous and local visual practices. It will examine such matters as the relationship between economic imperialism and cultural production, the transition from colonialism to postcolonialism, the effects of tourism and the value of 'decentred' postmodern modes of understanding in a non-European context.
