Description This course provides the basic introduction to the profession of mining engineering for all new students. Bearing this in mind, at the completion of this course a student should:
Appreciate the range of roles and responsibilities a mining engineer encounters in the workplace, and the broad range of career paths available. Have a basic understanding of underground and open cut mining methods and an introductory appreciation of the importance and relevance of the science and other engineering disciplines to mining. Be familiar with basic mine ventilation, explosives and blasting. Understand and appreciate the importance of safety and risk management in the workplace. Be confident in appreciating the history and current status of mining in Australia with a particular understanding of economic, social and environmental issues. Be somewhat prepared for what you may encounter in your first industrial training period. Note: Site visits and industry lectures are a requirement of this course and may involve additional personal expense.
