Description This is a semester long course for honours students in philosophy. It has two components: a seminar ‘Advanced Topics in Philosophy’ and a ‘Thesis Workshop’. ‘Advanced Topics in Philosophy’ is designed to expose students to some of the leading issues, debates and ideas within contemporary philosophy and the history of philosophy. This seminar will focus on a specific set of problems, concepts or figures in philosophy. The seminar will be divided into modules that will be led by different members of the philosophy program. The modules will reflect the diversity of approaches to philosophical inquiry.
The thesis workshop is designed to prepare students for writing an honours thesis in philosophy. Topics covered include: using the library for advanced research, this will involve a research consultation with a librarian; developing, structuring and writing a thesis; using secondary sources; the role of your supervisor in designing and executing your thesis; planning and managing a research project; approaches to presenting thesis research.
