Description

A seminar course for honours students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences preparing students for undertaking qualitative reseach for an honours thesis. The course is appropriate for those who are conducting an empirical research project as part of their thesis study. It provides students with an understanding of the role of qualitative research in the social sciences; knowledge and experience in the use of qualitative methods; an appreciation of their limitations and the social, theoretical and political context of their use. Topics include research design, techniques for data collection including fieldwork and observation, interviewing and focus groups and documentary analysis, qualitative data analysis, an introduction to the use of computers in Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA), and writing and presenting qualitative research.
