Subject Area: Hispanic Studies
In this course students reflect on their own past experiences accumulated through the coursework required for the major in Hispanic Studies. Students will demonstrate their skills and knowledge via oral presentations and written essays to be collected into an ePortfolio that can serve as supplementary documentation for potential employers or further academic study. The course topics are drawn from those covered in language and contextual studies courses in the major. These topics include but are not limited to the following: artists, artistic movements, artistic expression; architecture; specific literary pieces such as a poem or short story; specific authors; cinema; indigenous issues of language, culture, and politics; dialects of Spanish; cultural differences in advertising and other media; environmental issues; religion and belief systems; historical events and figures; specific countries or regions of the Spanish-speaking world; sociolinguistic issues; gender-based issues such as marianismo and machismo and the construction of masculinity and femeninity.
