Description

Subject Area: Sociology and Anthropology
This course can also be studied in the following specialisations: Australian Studies; Globalisation Studies

The course focuses on processes of emplacement and displacement. People live their lives in territories, across homelands or afar. They make homes, become part of regional terrains, nation states and travel through space. Places, landscapes and seascapes - real or imagined - encode and express identity. They are also locations for conflict and contestation. This course uses theories and case studies from sociology and anthropology to interrogate the relation between group formation and the negotiations over place. We will explore senses of belonging and investigate how colonisation, migration and globalisation complicate the realtionship between self, group, community and place.
