The subject introduces students to the formation of Islam as a world religion, the process of its spread to East Asia and South-East Asia, and its assimilation in contemporary East Asian and South-East Asian cultures. The focus will be on China, Japan, Korea Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. It also introduces students to the phenomenon of political Islam, a notion which has re-emerged as a trend in recent years. Other topics such as radicalism, women in Islam, Islam and the art are also explored.
