Higher Chemistry (Medicinal) 1A - CHEM1051 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Description This course builds on an elementary knowledge of chemistry (equivalent to year 12 Chemistry CHEM1001 at UNSW) to explore the quantum mechanical structure of atoms and molecules and the origin of periodic trends in the properties of atoms. This knowledge is applied to the understanding intermolecular forces and their importance in determining the properties of solids, liquids, and gases, and the properties of mixtures such as solutions. The course concludes with an overview of the classes of chemical reaction and the important topic of generating electrical energy from chemical reactions. Applications in biology,pharmaceuticals, the chemical industry, and corrosion are highlighted throughout the course. The core lectures are accompanied by a series of enrichment lectures on advanced and contemporary topics.
Students enrolled in CHEM1051 will attend the same lectures as CHEM1031, but will have unique tutorial and laboratory groups. Note: Assumed knowledge equivalent to year 12 Chemistry or CHEM1001.
