Subject Area: History and Philosophy of Science
The course provides an induction into the professional world of HPS through a weekly seminar which: examines the history of the field and its sub-fields in the 20th and 21st centuries as a basis for understanding present and possible futures; provides an integrating overview of a range of current preoccupations and controversies within the field; considers the variety of contexts in which HPS practitioners ply their skills (in education, journalism, museology, policy, activism) and how they do so; reflects upon the professional and ethical challenges that can arise in research and also in such activities as engaging in popularisation of the field, providing policy advice, tendering expert evidence in court, and combining the roles of expert and activist in public controversies.
