Subject Area: History and Philosophy of Science

Introduction to contemporary discussions of the mind, thought, intelligence and consciousness. Focuses on the issues which arise in connection with the so-called 'cognitive sciences' - the disciplines which include the fields of neuroscience, psychology, linguistics, philosophy of mind and artificial intelligence. Questions arising including 'Can computers think?' 'Is the brain a machine?' 'Is knowledge of language innate or learned?' 'Is the mind physical or immaterial?'
