Description This course provides the foundation for understanding material and environmental properties and behaviour in engineering and technology. It includes electronic structure of atoms and molecules, intermolecular forces, thermodynamic driving forces for chemical reactions, chemical equilibria, electrochemistry, corrosion and redox reactions, solution chemistry, acids and bases, kinetics and rates of reactions, complex molecular structures in metals, polymers and ceramics, crystalline lattices, yielding and lastic flow, strengthening mechanisms in metals, phase systems and alloys, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, mechanical behaviour and properties of materials.
