Description

The course provides the opportunity for the student to undertake a research project on a mining, minerals engineering or other topic approved by the Course Convenor. Candidates are required to submit a dissertation or thesis, conference paper and make a presentation. The work may take the form of an engineering analysis, experimental investigation, theoretical study or design project.

On completion of this course, the student will have an understanding of the process of scientific research. In so doing the student will apply the desperate knowledge and skills from earlier parts of the mining engineering program including:
  • an understanding of scientific and engineering principles;
  • principles of design and modelling;
  • selection and use of appropriate analysis techniques - technical, statistical and financial;
  • project management;
  • communication skills; and
  • people and teamwork skills - interaction, feedback, task setting.
The student should be capable of demonstrating an ability to:
  • design and assemble apparatus suitable for test experiments;
  • source and ensure test materials are prepared to the required standards and available at the required time;
  • undertake a planned program of experiments or investigation;
  • collate, summarise and present the research results in the form of a thesis dissertation and seminar presentation;
  • analyse results and formulate relevant conclusions and recommendations;
  • prepare a draft document to the standards required for submission to a conference hosted by a professional association.
