Description To provide Environmental Engineers with an overview of the resources and analytical tools in Spatial Information Systems applicable to their discipline, and to provide an understanding of the roles of other professions in SIS. An introduction to coordinate reference systems, with particular reference to Australia. Overview and background of spatial information systems. Explanations of definitions and terminology of LIS and GIS. Introduction to remote sensing. Sources of spatial information, field surveys including GPS, maps, aerial photography, satellite imagery. Introduction to image analysis techniques for remote sensing. Introduction to geographical information systems for display, management and analysis of spatial information. Modelling and analysis techniques and software for GIS. Application of above to environmental engineering. A view of the future.
