Description

Subject Area: Asian Studies

This course introduce students to the wide gamut of cultural practices in East, South and Southeast Asia with special focus on film, media and journalism, cuisine, theater and the performing arts (such as Beijing Opera, or wajang kulit), popular media, contemporary art, Indian Bollywood as well as sports (Japanese sumo wrestling), and festivals and entertainment (such as new year celebrations in a variety of Asian countries or cockfighting in Southeast Asia). The East Asia component includes a discussion of TV drama (the cultural flow among Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea and China focusing on format cloning), East Asian Cute Culture (from Japanese manga to Chinese mobile phone make up), and 'Korean wave' (globalisation and pop culture consumption in East Asia.
