Semantics and Pragmatics - LING2540 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Description Considers the nature and scope of semantics and pragmatics and their place within linguistics. Begins with an examination of the nature of linguistic meaning. Particular attention is paid to the different theoretical approaches to lexical semantics, the relationship between semantics and grammar, and semantic change. Considers the way language is used in real world contexts and how meanings are shaped by contextual factors, such as who is speaking to whom, in what kinds of spatio-temporal and sociocultural situations. Includes an exploration of speech act theory, conversational maxims, politeness theory, and notions of context and culture.
