Description Students will be introduced to fundamental concepts in Physics through a selection of topics in the following three areas. General Physics and Mechanics: dimensions and dimensional analysis; coordinate systems; kinematics and dynamics; Newton's laws of motion, momentum, friction; energy, work and power; rotational dynamics, moments of inertia, angular momentum. Wave Motion and Optics: classification of waves, wave equation, harmonic waves, superposition, standing waves, Doppler effect; Huygens' principle, reflection, refraction, lenses and mirrors, interference, diffraction, resolving power of instruments. Atomic and Nuclear Physics: wave-particle duality; the wave nature of particles; de Broglie wavelength; electron and X-ray diffraction; photoelectric effect; quantisation of energy; Bohr model of the hydrogen atom; the nucleus and nuclear particles, unstable nuclei; ionising radiation; radiocarbon dating; nuclear energy. Lectures and tutorials are supported by four three-hour laboratory sessions.
