Description

Introduces students to some key areas of feminist thought, past and present, to feminist scholarship today and questions of sex and gender. There will also be a focus on representation, categories of identity, and differences within and critiques of feminism. A central aim is to introduce students to the heterogeneity or breadth of thinking covered by the term 'feminism'.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should gain:
  • An understanding of feminist issues, thinking and activism (from the 1st to so-called 3rd Wave)
  • An awareness of feminist scholarship today which includes women's studies, gender studies, the study of sexualities, and a range of different approaches (postcolonial feminist, psychoanalytic feminism)
  • An understanding of critiques of feminism from conservatives or from women who have felt excluded by the purported white, middle class, western norms and biases seen to inhere in 'feminism'.
