Description

Reviews, develops and extends students' skills. Students will be presented with increasingly complex language situations requiring a greater proficiency in language skills with the aim of increasing fluency and accuracy in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Encourages students to improve their ability to speak and write in Spanish by discussing and writing about Spanish issues in different registers, to improve their reading and aural comprehension skills by exposing them to a wide variety of written and aural materials, from different sources and with different local varieties.

Note: The completion of SPAN2004 at credit level is recommended for entry into this course. All language teaching is in tutorial groups.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
  • Write formal complex letters using conventionalisms, punctuation, accents and relevant vocabulary
  • Identify and use descriptive and narrative discourse, distinguish between informal and formal registers in complex texts, describe past events using connectors and complex sentences, recognise and use indicative and subjunctive modes in complex texts, revise uses of pronouns, prepositions, past tenses, imperatives, adverbs and articles
  • Describe events related to the Mexican revolution and the period of the nineteen-eighties in Spain
  • Examine the life and work of a Spanish speaking author-philosopher using the appropriate register, vocabulary and grammar and investigate and present findings related to an historical event, a linguistic or musical aspect of a Spanish speaking country.

  • Reading/writing/culture assessments (x2) - 30%
