Description

Provides an understanding of theories of communication and their application in the context of social work practice. Includes selected communication skills exercises. Provides an awareness of the ways effective communication can be used to achieve particular outcomes. Exploration of professional and personal value systems in relation to social work codes of ethics.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  • Articulate what is a basic model of communication
  • Understand the range of knowledge and skills required to communicate in a range of contexts
  • Demonstrate a range of basic verbal & non verbal communication skills
  • Articulate what are some of the barriers to effective communication
  • Write a reflective diary and understand its use
  • Understand a basic exploratory interview using some listening, reflecting and questioning skills
  • Understand the effectiveness of your own use of communication skills in the exploratory stage of an interview
  • Articulate what are some of your own personal values and how they may impact on effective communication with other people.

Assessment

  • Reflective journal assignment - 30%
  • Communication assignment - 40%
  • Exam - 30%
