Description

Considers both voluntary and involuntary migration: from business migration and family reunion to various forms of exile and refugee flows. The social consequences of migration on the host society, the country of origin, and the migrant will be examined in light of questions of human solidarity, neighbourliness and justice.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should have:
  • A knowledge of the causes and consequences of migration
  • An understanding of the distinctions between 'voluntary' and 'forced' migration
  • An appreciation of universalist versus relativist positions on culture
  • An understanding of the relationship between rights and responsibilities
  • The ability to evaluate different approaches to the integration of migrants.

  • Short essay (1000 words) - 20%
  • Major essay (3000 words) - 50%
  • Critical review of unseen reading - 15%
  • Tutorial participation and report - 15%
