Description

Introduces the ideas of some of the main political thinkers of the twentieth century; examines some of their main theories and concepts with particular emphasis on their views of power, of society and of the state; examines some of the main principles of justice, equity and human rights that have become current this century.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should have:
  • A solid grasp of the vocabulary and character of contemporary political theory
  • Some critical ability in assessing concepts central to the study of politics, such as, authority, power, the state, liberalism, democracy, justice, rights
  • A reasonable knowledge of some of the major figures in modern political thought and an ability to compare them with one another.

Assessment

  • Tutorial participation - 10%
  • Two short papers - 10%
  • Essay (2500 words) - 40%
  • Two class tests - 40%
